Finland : Scholarships to the Finnish Post-Graduate School in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies
The Finnish Post-Graduate School in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (Titeko) aims to develop doctoral education in the areas of science, technology and innovation studies in Finland, strengthen the existing research groups and generate research facilities for the development of multidisciplinary research environment. Titeko links together central academic research groups in the fields of science, technology and innovation studies in Finland. Titeko is coordinated by the University of Helsinki, cooperating universities are Aalto University, University of Tampere, University of Jyväskylä, University of Eastern Finland and University of Oulu.
Post-graduate school started in 2002 for graduate students to receive a Ph.D. within four years. During the following terms 2002-2005 and 2006-2009 it had three doctorate positions funded by the Ministry of Education. For the years 2010-2013 the Academy of Finland allocated five positions. After the call for applications in 2009 the board of the post-graduate school decided to organize a second call for the remaining two years. In this present application round graduate students can apply for a position (5 altogether) at Titeko starting on January 1, 2012. The maximum funding period is two years (24 months). Those applicants, who have already started their doctoral studies and want to join Titeko, should indicate in their application and research plan how far their work has progressed, and how many months will be needed until their studies are finished. The applicants must be qualified to pursue doctoral studies at one of the participating units/departments at the six universities [ units/departments ].
The application must contain the following items in English:
• research plan [ research plan structure] (max. 7 pages)
• scanned pdf copies of relevant diplomas
• CV [CV ]
• list of publications [list of publications]
• PhD supervisor(s)
• clarification of the registration (or having registration in progress) as doctoral student in one of the member universities of Titeko
• motivation for applying to Titeko
• length of required funding
Doctoral students will be selected according the following criteria:
• relevance of research subject to Titeko research themes [ research themes ]
• PhD supervisor’s affiliation with the Titeko research groups [ Titeko supervisors ]
• scientific relevance and significance of the research subject
• quality of the research plan
• need for multidisciplinary supervision
• potential to receive a PhD within the funded term
• skills in independent research and scientific writing
• international orientation
The salary for the present posts will be based on levels of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The applicants are required to present a letter by their department/unit director which states that the department/unit will provide a working space for the applicant and commits to cover the proper salary level (YPJ-evaluated) that exceeds 1844 euros/month. The Board of the Graduate School will announce the final selection of the students on October, 2011.
